Our first real experience of the Doghouse is when I signed me and Yoshi up for a 2 session dog walking class last August with the on staff trainer. Yoshi was then 5 months old and full of puppyness. We had already taken two classes at the Ann Arbor Dog Training Club but Yoshi was a handful as a pup (I had scars on the back of my calves from his teeth when he was being playful). The trainer, in his calm way, encouraged me to bring Yoshi to the Doghouse for doggy daycare so Yoshi would get socialization with other dogs (and people) and find out and learn what behavior was ok and what was not.
It's about training the dog but it's more about training the person on other end of the leash. There is so much to learn! You have taken the right step of reaching out while the puppy is young. There are books I can recommend too that have been helpful but I think the most important thing to do is socialize the puppy while he is young.
I can't say enough great things about the trainer at DOGHOUSE. I contacted him a few months ago when my dog Gabby began getting snappy with other dogs. She is a rescue, and I think a Jack Russell Terrier, so she is very high energy and I was getting overwhelmed with how to train her. I worked with the trainer one on one with Gabby, and she has responded amazingly. She has learned new ways to deal with other dogs when she gets nervous, and has also greatly improved with recall issues she was having. I now love taking Gabby out to play, and she is a much happier dog as well. I also have boarded Gabby on occasion with the DOGHOUSE staff when I am away, and I know she has a great time hanging out. Gabby just loves his trainer! I highly recommend DOGHOUSE training to anyone having issues with their dog. He is an amazing trainer and a great person to work with!
